How to Pack a Balikbayan Box
Sending a balikbayan box to loved ones back home is a cherished tradition for many Filipinos. These boxes are filled with love and thoughtful gifts, making the journey from your home to theirs. To ensure your items arrive safely and intact, here are some tips on how to pack a balikbayan box:
1. Choose the Right Box
Start with a sturdy and durable box. At Cabalen Cargo Express, our boxes are double walled and built to withstand weights up to 170lbs. While we accept any cargo boxes, we recommend ours, so you don’t have to worry about your cargo being damaged during transport. Balikbayan boxes come in various sizes, so pick one that suits the amount and type of items you plan to send. Make sure the box is in good condition with no weak spots or tears.
2. Gather Packing Supplies
You’ll need:
- Packing tape
- Bubble wrap
- Ziplock bags
- Old newspapers or packing paper
- Scissors
- Markers for labeling
3. Organize Your Items
Sort your items into categories such as clothes, toiletries, canned goods, electronics, and fragile items. This will help in packing them more efficiently.
4. Wrap Fragile Items
For fragile items, use bubble wrap generously. If you have old clothes or towels, these make an excellent substitute for securing your fragile items from any possible damage. This added layer of protection helps prevent breakage during transit.
5. Layer the Bottom
Start by placing heavier items like spam, corned beef, salmon and any other canned goods at the bottom of the box. This provides a solid base and prevents lighter items from getting crushed. Fill any gaps with crumpled newspaper, packing paper, old clothes, draperies or towels to keep items secure.
6. Pack Clothes and Soft Items
Next, layer soft items like clothes, towels, and blankets. These can act as cushions for more fragile items. Roll clothes tightly to save space and prevent wrinkles.
7. Secure Toiletries and Liquids
Place toiletries and liquid items in zip lock bags to prevent leaks. It’s good practice to tape the top of shampoos and liquids as a preventive measure from possible leaking. It’s also helps to wrap them in a plastic bag for extra security. If you have chocolates and soaps, try to keep them separate and further away from each other so your candy doesn’t end up tasting like soap.
8. Fill Gaps and Reinforce
Ensure there are no empty spaces in the box. Fill gaps with crumpled newspaper, packing paper, or even smaller items. This prevents items from shifting during transit.
9. Seal the Box
Once everything is packed securely, close the box and seal it with packing tape. Reinforce all seams and edges with multiple layers of tape. Label the box with the recipient’s name, address, and your contact information.
10. Final Check
Give the box a gentle shake to check for any movement inside. If you hear items shifting, open the box and add more items or padding until everything is secure.
11. Drop-off or Pickup
Arrange for your box to be picked up by calling us at (510) 376-3018, or drop it off at our branch located at,
